Natalie Dowse is interested in blending the boundaries between high and low culture, compounding familiar features of mass appeal with those of considered value.
Her work examines notions of documentation and associated memory. She works from photographic sources which can be her own or borrowed, untouched or spliced together to make fictional scenarios. By using secondary sources, she can take ownership of the image and steal any experience, suggesting narratives and memories whether real or artificially constructed. The spectators' personal response and connection to this imagery intrigue her, culturally evoking common experiences and constructed memory.
Dowse's practice is not only concerned with content, but also with the formal aspects; the historical context of image production, the relationship between painting, photography and the film and television screen which is evident in the execution of the paintings.
