Shelagh Williams Time denotes events and the spaces in between.
Things are changed with time but time itself is a constant.
It does not change.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the waters of the Outer Hebrides where the ebb and flow of huge tides cover then expose large tracts of sand - sandbars.
The colour and light of which are fleeting landmarks reaching out to the far horizon, as if into infinity, emitting an energy accentuated by the very transience of their existence.
Here the unremitting cycle of tide, day, night and seasons create a deep-rooted sense of permanence, of an identity strong enough to hold fast in an ever-changing world.
It is this notion of time and its associated rhythms that form the basis of my work.
In order to sustain the initial spontaneity in the evolving images, the process of alternately layering and washing off paint becomes symbolic.
The surface, its boundaries and edges are eroded and rediscovered until the essence of the original inspiration is discovered.
