"Born in the wild flat land of Lincolnshire in 1968 to itinerant parents, my rootless childhood led to a dependency on other worlds inspired by the art books my mother carted around, and of course, the telly. Batman and Marine Boy pranced around the Hieronymus Bosch landscape in my head. My later work experience in a chicken factory only encouraged my warped imagination, and when I got round to peeking between the covers of an old "Atomage" bondage magazine I was well on the road to an exploration of people's rubbery inclinations."
A former illustrator and website designer Ellen McAuslan has been developing characters and Flash animations on her website rubberfish.com since 1999. Her specialization in animation has augmented a persistent exploration of psychological constraint. Themes of confinement and enthrallment have been present throughout much of her illustration work and have culminated in the Ms Swat series of animations and prints.
Episodes from the series have been presented at various festivals and competitions worldwide, most notably Bristol Animated Encounters and the Zagreb Film Festival. The bold design and ambiguity of the storylines and characters are well suited to abbreviation and the abstracted prints and storyboards that have resulted continue to resonate with the tension between menace and humour.
