PAINTING: The first element of paintings in this series is childhood memory of place. Early work displayed a naïve fascination with subject matter. Compositions are usually from imagination.
A sense of mystery and time passed tend to unite and lead to the metaphor of decay or loss, especially in the context of opulent society. The world seems to me vast and suitably disparate.
The paintings are pensive and whatever strangeness manifests, there is an 'inevitability', a fatalistic situation about it. All associated with the above statement merely lodges in an implacable universe.
Our great benefactor is nature and I would like to depict it with the knowledge that it eventually reclaims itself without mitigation. It has become to me a cradle to the grave organic process, ultimately subject to the grapple of fickle chance.
ASSEMBLAGES: In 1991 I threw a cup of molten wax into a bucket of cold water and was fascinated with the 'thing'' that resulted. This led to an idea, a 'vision' of a dimly lit room full of strange, mysterious and eerie objects. All obsessive small islands resistant to being like anything else.
Soon the construction method had become established on a gravitational basis and all kinds of fragments were finding their potential for attachment. Wax was replaced by other materials. A synchronicity developed and suitable material would often be found as required.
There is a tension between formality and anarchy in many of the assemblages. Some have a 'Memento Mori' element. My usual interests of the wild, the man made, time and a feeling of inevitability started to become manifest.
During the winter of 2006 many lesser pieces were broken down and in part incorporated into others. This frenzy of mania and self-doubt led to a good creative conclusion.
The 'Collection' now consists of over one hundred assemblages, which has finally come to symbolise my feelings about a strange and disparate world at its most beguiling. |
