For my degree show in 2005 I focused on an area of the world that we know little about, the darkness that prevails at the depths of our oceans. According to Robert Kunzig, author of Mapping the Deep, humans may have scrutinized 'perhaps a millionth or a billionth of the seas darkness, maybe less maybe much less.' My paintings from that time are a visual portrayal of the glimmer of life that I feel could exist at the abyss. It is only with artificial light that we are made aware of a whole other world at the seabed. I was looking at natural history books and films as research. I want the viewer to feel that there is an essence of something recognisable, a unique place that borrows from ours. Gradually the forms I depict have become more abstract and despite a lack of reference to any familiar forms I still want to illicit an emotional response, one that is more intuitive than rational.
Since finishing at Winchester I have been focusing more on the genre of landscape. Again I have been trying to create a feeling of otherworldliness. The landscape of a world changed by events unstoppable, environmental damage or perhaps war. Recently I travelled by rail from Germany into Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia. I found that the landscape has had a huge affect on my work. On returning I looked at the work of British landscape artist Paul Nash, and also Anselm Kiefer. In particular their depictions of war torn landscapes. Artists Peter Doig, Paul Noble and Michael Raedecker are three contemporary artists that tackle the subject of landscape. The latter in particular has been a huge influence, his scenes of solitude and emotional isolation also suggest something inherantly sinister. My research has prompted me to create scenes that are almost post apocalyptic, places that are void of humanity but suggest some sort of human interference. |
